Lifecode Gx Histamine Intolerance DNA Test

Histamine
At-home Lifecode Gx DNA test

Find out why your body reacts, not just what it reacts to

You flush after a glass of wine. Your nose runs after dinner. Your skin itches for no obvious reason, and the headaches seem to come from nowhere. You’ve probably cut foods, tried antihistamines and done a food intolerance test, and you’re still not sure what’s going on.

This is one of the most common stories I hear in clinic. Very often, the missing piece is histamine: not an allergy, but a body that struggles to clear histamine as fast as it builds up.

The Lifecode Gx histamine test is a simple at-home cheek swab. It looks at the genes that control how you break down and remove histamine, so we can see where your bottlenecks are. Then I turn your results into a clear, personalised plan, so you stop guessing and start feeling better.

Signs to look out for

Is histamine part of your picture?

Histamine isn’t the enemy. It helps with digestion, immunity and even your sleep-wake cycle. The problem starts when it builds up faster than your body can clear it, and the symptoms can show up almost anywhere.

This test may be worth considering if you recognise several of these:

  • Flushing, itching, hives or rashes with no clear trigger
  • A blocked or runny nose, sneezing, or tight breathing after eating
  • Bloating, cramping or loose stools that don’t fit a simple food pattern
  • Headaches or migraines, especially after wine, aged cheese or leftovers
  • Trouble falling asleep, feeling wired at night, or anxiety that seems to come from nowhere
  • Symptoms that flare around your cycle
  • Reactions that seem to change from week to week, so nothing ever quite adds up

That last one is the giveaway for many of my clients. Histamine works like a bucket. Food, stress, hormones and your gut bacteria all top it up, and symptoms only appear when it overflows. That’s why cutting one food rarely fixes things, and why so many people tell me they’ve tried everything.

It’s also why I look at the gut alongside your genes. An imbalanced microbiome can produce more histamine, and an irritated gut lining makes less of the enzyme that breaks it down. Your DNA shows us how big your bucket is; your gut and lifestyle show us how fast it’s filling.

Seven genes, two pathways

What the Lifecode Gx histamine test looks at

Your body has two main ways to clear histamine. DAO works in the gut, dealing with histamine from food and gut bacteria. HNMT works inside your cells, in the brain, lungs and skin. The Lifecode Gx Histamine Intolerance report looks at seven genes across both routes, plus the steps that support them.

Gene What it does Why it matters for you
DAO Breaks down histamine in the gut Slower DAO can mean reactions to histamine-rich foods like wine, cured meats and leftovers
HNMT Breaks down histamine inside cells Linked to skin, breathing, sleep and anxiety-type symptoms
MTHFR Drives methylation, which HNMT relies on Low methylation can slow histamine clearance in the nervous system
MAOB Clears the by-products of HNMT A slow step here can keep the whole pathway backed up
ALDH2 Clears the by-products of DAO; also processes alcohol Often why wine hits some people so much harder
NAT2 A back-up route for clearing histamine and other compounds Shows how much reserve capacity you have
GPX1 Antioxidant protection for the gut lining Oxidative stress can damage the cells that make DAO

Each gene comes with the nutrients it depends on, so your plan is specific. For example, DAO relies on copper, vitamin B6 and vitamin C, while HNMT relies on the B vitamins that feed methylation.

Your genes aren’t your destiny. They show where you’re more vulnerable, and diet, gut health, stress and targeted nutrients decide how those genes actually behave.

Simple, at-home testing

How it works

  1. Book a strategy call so we can check this is the right test for you and choose your panels.
  2. Your kit arrives at home. It’s a simple cheek swab, with no blood and no needles.
  3. Post it back to the Lifecode Gx lab.
  4. I analyse your report alongside your symptoms, history and any recent blood tests.
  5. We meet online to go through your results, and you leave with a clear plan and a recording of the session.

The histamine report works best alongside the DNA Methylation panel, because methylation feeds directly into histamine clearance. Pricing depends on which panels you choose and how your programme is set up, so we’ll decide together on your strategy call.

Your questions answered

Histamine DNA test FAQs

Is there a test for histamine intolerance? + −

There’s no single test that confirms it. Blood DAO levels swing from day to day, so one result can mislead. A DNA test shows your built-in capacity to clear histamine, which never changes. I combine that with your symptoms and history to get a clear answer.

What's the difference between a histamine DNA test and a food intolerance test? + −

IgG food tests measure your immune system’s response to foods, and a long list of positives usually points to a leaky gut rather than true intolerances. The histamine DNA test looks at how well you break histamine down, whatever food it comes from.

Can I have a DAO gene variant and feel fine? + −

Yes. A variant means your bucket is smaller, not that it’s overflowing. Many people only notice symptoms once stress, gut issues or hormonal shifts pile on. That’s why your results are always read alongside your history.

Do I need to stop antihistamines before the test? + −

No. Your DNA doesn’t change, so medication, diet and supplements won’t affect the result.

How long do results take? + −

Results take 3 to 4 weeks from when the lab receives your sample. Once your report is in, we book your results consultation.

Can I do the test from outside the UK? + −

Yes. I work with clients internationally and all consultations are online. Get in touch and I’ll confirm kit delivery to your country.

Will I have to follow a low-histamine diet forever? + −

Usually not. A lower-histamine diet can calm things down while we work on the root causes, like gut health, nutrient status and stress. The goal is a bigger bucket, not a smaller plate.
