Hack Your Hormones: Achieving Menstrual Mastery

In today’s busy world, hormonal imbalances can profoundly impact our physical and emotional well-being. Many women struggle with painful periods, PMS, PCOS, and irregular cycles, but these symptoms are not inevitable. By understanding our menstrual cycles and the hormones that drive them, we can restore balance, boost our health, and reclaim our vitality.

I had the privilege of teaching this “Hack Your Hormones” workshop at Nebula Coworking and Entrepreneur Space in Bali to a group of wonderful ladies, some of whom work in the female health space. It was a joy to teach and share my knowledge with them. For those of you who reside elsewhere, I’m pleased to make the recording available to everyone interested!

Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle

The menstrual cycle involves more than just “that time of the month.” It comprises four key phases: menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase. Each phase is shaped by hormonal shifts, particularly involving oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones influence everything from mood and energy levels to how our bodies handle stress and process nutrients.

Tailoring your lifestyle and nutrition to these phases can significantly enhance your well-being. For example, during the follicular phase, energy levels and oestrogen rise, making it an ideal time for high-intensity workouts, creative projects, and even intermittent fasting if it suits your needs. Conversely, the luteal phase calls for a gentler approach, including yoga, stress reduction, and nutrient-dense meals.

Nutritional Foundations for Hormonal Balance

Nutrition plays a pivotal role in balancing hormones. High-quality protein should comprise at least 25% of your meals, while leafy greens offer essential folate and fibre to support hormone detoxification. Managing blood sugar, consuming healthy fats, and reducing inflammatory foods can also help maintain optimal hormonal function.

Addressing Common Imbalances

Conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, and PMS often have underlying triggers such as inflammation, insulin resistance, and stress. Functional medicine takes a holistic view, identifying these triggers and addressing imbalances. Tools like blood and stool testing, as well as DNA and hormone analysis, provide personalised insights and solutions.
